If You Want to Experiment With Fasting

Fasting is a traditional and very effective discipline drawing close and listening to God. If you would like to experiment with fasting this year in preparation for Easter here are some suggestions.

1. First, pick a day of the week that will not put you in a situation where you will need to explain publicly why you aren’t eating. On each week between now and Easter let that be your fast day. Let your family know what you’re doing and invite them to join you in your fast or at least understand why you won’t be eating with them on that day.

2. On the day of your fast, replace each meal (breakfast, lunch and dinner) with reading your Bible. You can focus on the Easter passages or read out of your regular daily plan. Drink as much water as you need that day but deny yourself any food.

3. Don’t eat anything until breakfast on the morning following your fast day. After your fast, record what you experienced in your journal. Was it harder or easier than you thought? Were you even able to do it? Did you hear God speak to you? Be honest about your experience. Don’t be discouraged if you couldn’t make it the first time. It may take several attempts before you actually can make a whole day.

4. During this month before Easter you might also want to fast from the media and other sources of information that tend to distract your from God and focus more on activities and books that direct your mind and your spirit toward God.

Important Note: If you have existing health conditions please check with your doctor to see if it is ok for you to try a one day fast.
